Living apart (well, sort of)

We have a sort of strange situation at the moment, but somehow it seems to work. I sleep in the apartment at night, but I go back to the family house every morning before going to work. I get the kids’ breakfasts and bring them to school. Then, after work I am back in the family house, putting them to bed, reading stories and settling them down. Normally there is work to do afterwards, or a bit of TV. So, I don’t usually get back to the apartment until at least 11.00. My wife is around for most of the evening – she even makes my dinner most days, and often we will share a few drinks while watching the TV.

So is it really a trial separation? Apart from not actually sleeping in the family home, it certainly seems quite far from it.

I’ve been a bit bemused by it myself, so I brought the topic up with my wife a few nights ago. She thinks it’s working well – just the mere fact that I am not sleeping in the same bed has helped her.

Strangely enough, I’ve also found it easier than I expected. Somehow, it’s as if a layer of anxiety has been lifted off me since I moved out. I still get to see the youngsters as much as I ever did, and yet I also now have my own space.
